The three most common turfs used are Zoysia, Couch, and Buffalo and each have different varieties available.  Below you will find information on each turf as well as recommended varieties for your region.

  • Warm-season grasses.
  • Commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions.
  • Fast growing dense grass.
  • Drought resistance.
  • Requires at least 6 hours of full sun a day so not suitable for shaded areas.
  • Popular choice for sports fields and commercial applications.

 

Varieties:

  • Wintergreen
    • Fine texture and a deep olive green color.
    • Vigorous growth.

  • Tropika and Blue Couch
    • Thicker blade widths and a slight blue tinge.
    • Lower maintenance.
    • Greater pest resistance.
    • Don’t require regular scarification to look perfect.
    • Attractive option for many homeowners.

  • TifTuf Couch
    • Fine textured.
    • Drought tolerant.
    • Fast spreading, great for areas requiring recovery.

Palmetto Buffalo Lawn Turf

  • Buffalo Variants have thick blades.
  • Tolerate shade.
  • Aggressive growth habit which helps them recover from damage.
  • Not the most attractive lawns, however they are often the practical choice for homeowners with semi shaded areas and high traffic.
  • Semi-regular scarification is required for buffalo lawns as part of the root system grows above ground.
  • If scarification is not done, the lawn will feel spongy underneath your feet.

 

Varieties:

  • Palmetto Soft Leaf Buffalo
    • A coarse-textured buffalo grass.
    • Dark green leaves 8-9 mm wide.
    • Course texture.
    • Excellent heat tolerance in high and low humidity areas.
    • Good shade tolerance.
    • Fair wear tolerance, but not suited for high traffic areas.

  • Kings Pride Buffalo
    • A coarse-textured buffalo grass.
    • A coarse-textured buffalo grass.
    • Used for recreational (parks), commercial and domestic lawns.
    • Fast growing.
    • Suited for low usage, shady environments.
    • Routine mowing is needed to keep the variety in check.

  • Sapphire Buffalo
    • Medium textured leaf (width avg. 5.8 mm)
    • Leaves are blue-green in colour and medium-long brown to yellow green stolons.
    • Excellent heat tolerance in high and low humidity areas.
    • Does not show significant yellowing in summer.
    • Moderate to high shade tolerance.
    • Can withstand shading under trees.
    • Not recommended for high traffic areas.

  • Sir Walter Buffalo / Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo
    • Excellent in high and low-humidity areas
    • Grows best at moderate temperatures between 20°C and 30°C.
    • Often selected for its winter colour retention.
    • Can withstand shading under trees.
    • Has a deep root system with less leaf water-loss compared with some other “soft-leaf” buffalograsses.
    • Fast growing, including vertical growth.
    • Requires routine mowing to keep the variety in check.

Shadetuff Lawn Turf

  • Lush thinner bladed lawn.
  • Great for semi shaded areas.
  • Slow growing which reduces how often it requires mowing.
  • More temperamental as damage incurred from pests, diseases, traffic, and mowing too low, will take longer to repair.
